"If my husband is ripped away again I don't think our marriage will survive. I'm out."
Shalom,
By now you may be feeling the effects of the fast and also realizing one of the fast's purposes -- that there are more important things in life than food and comfort.
A fast day is a time to take stock -- of our personal lives and our national lives. What really counts?
One of the things at the top of our lists is relationships. How do I relate to others? How do I feel and care about others? How do I relate to my People and my G-d?
Tisha b'Av teaches us clearly that as a Nation we have had many "confrontations", even "fights" with G-d, but never a "divorce." Even if divorce is possible for a human Jewish couple, it is absolutely not an option for The Divine Couple, i.e. G-d and His Bride, the Jewish People. This is the message of today's fast and mourning.
On the human level, Jewish tradition urges us to do everything possible to save a Jewish home. Not only must the couple make every effort to strengthen their union, but every Jew must do their best to aid a couple in distress.
Today is day 667 of the war. Vast numbers of defenders have served over 365 days, over a year's worth separated from their wives and families. Some have serves over 600 days. We admire and salute them and their unfathomly amazing wives.
But for some the price has been unbearable. Divorces and even suicides have been direct results of the extraordinary stress.
A soldier who recently attempted to take his own life said, "I have no home to retrun to. My family fell apart."
Thank G-d, Israeli society is awake to this challenge. The IDF takes active steps to help and guide all its members. It provides counseling to combat units and grants 1500 shekels for couples to spend on improving their relationship.
But many, many couples need more. HaTzadik.Org, following in the loving path of Rabbi Aryeh Levin zt"l, sponsors Couples Retreats to Refresh Love After War.
Recently one wife shared:
“My husband came back from war a different person, unrecognizable. I cried all night when he returned. I couldn’t imagine how we’d find our way back to each other. These workshops gave us the tools to start over — to heal, to talk, and to love again. Thank you.”
We need your help to bring these life-changing retreats, workshops, and events to many more soldiers, their wives and children — helping them reconnect, heal, and thrive.
After he’s served hundreds of days in uniform, and she’s held the homefront with strength and sacrifice — they deserve the chance to find each other again and build their love!
